In our high-tech society, webmaster certification and advanced knowledge are valuable skills to possess. With the internet webmaster certificate program from American Public University (APU), learn the essential skills for website design and development in order to create compelling, personalized websites. Study best practices for layout, navigation, typography, web graphics, and color theory.

This online undergraduate program provides hands-on experience with HTML5, cascading style sheets (CSS), graphics, tables, templates, frames, forms, snippets, Adobe Dreamweaver®, and Adobe Flash®. Learn the fundamentals of XML, XHTML, mobile media, structural elements (tables and framesets), and metadata. You’ll also investigate the technical side of web design, including protocols, browsers, search engines, web services, and internet security.

What You Will Do

  1. Study the World Wide Web’s architecture, directory structures, document flow, and protocols
  2. Become familiar with network protocol functions, network transmission media and types, network architecture and topologies, the internet architecture model, and internet protocols
  3. Understand how to design webpages with attention to content, typography, colors, images, and page layout, and how to use style sheets to enhance reusability and create consistent interfaces
  4. Learn design principles and concepts for effective information organization, site design, and navigation structure, including how to use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to develop webpages and website templates
  5. Study email and File Transfer Protocol (FTP) features, functions, and settings, and the risks of using FTP, as well as the differences between web search engines, web directories, and web metasearch engines and the future of web search tools

This course is a study of the evolution, the concepts, and the principles of local, distributed and enterprise networking. This course examines Network design, topologies, architecture, media, interface cards, protocols, problem resolution, communications, administration, operations, and resources. It introduces the student to the concepts of wireless networking, and web-based networks. This course also explores the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) and the Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Packet (TCP/IP) reference models. This course also examines internetworking servers, and hardware and operating systems maintenance.

This course introduces students to website development through a combination of readings and hands-on development exercises. This course covers coding with Hypertext Markup Language 5 (HTML5), website development essentials, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), graphical elements, hyperlinks, HTML table creation, web forms, video, audio and image techniques, website development for business, and website publishing and maintenance. Fundamentals of JavaScript® programming are also introduced in this course. Students will need access to a web browser such as Microsoft Edge Firefox, or Google Chrome. Microsoft Edge, Firefox, or Google Chrome are not provided by the course material grant and must be purchased/provided by students. To succeed in this course, students will also need basic computer knowledge such as creating files and folders, downloading and uploading files, creating zipped files, and working with a text editor such as Notepad++. This course teaches advanced website development concepts and skills through a combination of readings and hands-on development exercises. It builds upon students’ fundamental coding skills by emphasizing HTML5 structure elements, embedded video and audio elements, HTML5 APIs, cross-browser user-input forms, the use of JavaScript® to add interactive capabilities to webpages, and the use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS3) to enhance reusability and design consistent user interfaces. The class will also introduce advanced CSS3 techniques, including 2D and 3D transformations, transitions, animations, and user interface (UI) properties. Techniques for developing webpages, optimized for mobile devices, including Responsive Web Design (RWD), are emphasized. This course covers the Advanced HTML5 and CSS3 Specialist curriculum needed to pursue the CIW Web and Mobile Design Professional certificate. Students will need access to a web browser such as Microsoft Edge or Firefox. This software is not provided by the course material grant and must be purchased/provided by students.
