Why Pursue an MA in Intelligence Studies?
In this intelligence studies program, you will discuss the United States’ and other countries’ pressing need for security and intelligence expertise. Courses detail the ever-evolving roles of those entrusted with procuring intelligence to help guide national security officials. Learners also consider how the IC’s work impacts everything from human rights to economic development to global security.
As you progress through the curriculum, you will study:
- IC navigational efforts to measure ethical concerns pertaining to intelligence collection methods
- The relationship between intel, security, and civil liberties
- How security and intelligence professionals support not only homeland security, but also the U.S. criminal justice system and military operations
- The roles of security and intelligence in both public- and private-sector settings
Learn How the IC Responds to New and Emerging Threats
As national security threats increase in scale and sophistication, analysts must undertake ongoing efforts to sharpen their skills. New technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), have the potential to embolden foreign adversaries and transform intelligence operations. Protecting national IT infrastructure is therefore imperative to prevent malicious actors from stealing sensitive information and disrupting global supply chains.
Study a Broad Spectrum of Intelligence Analysis Functions
This master’s degree program addresses various applications for intelligence collection and analysis skills. For instance, learners review how analysts in the public sector identify early warning signals to respond to homeland security threats. Courses also explore how military leaders use knowledge of enemy combatants to guide their strategic decisions.
Students also observe how intelligence functions carry over to the private sector. Analysts provide private organizations with insights into the competitive business landscape. Additionally, corporate intel teams help decision-makers to identify and evaluate suspected security risks.
Still, regardless of whether intelligence professionals work in the public or private sector, they must have the skills necessary to:
- Collect and interpret raw data
- Analyze data gaps
- Conduct swift analyses of potential security risks
- Communicate information clearly and in a timely manner
This online Master of Arts program blends classroom learning with independent study to prepare students accordingly. Courses facilitate communication skills through a combination of written assignments and weekly class discussions. Coursework also promotes critical thinking, as learners research various case studies that detail intelligence analysis practices.
Protecting Homeland Security
The Intelligence Community is comprised of working professionals who keep the United States safe by informing decision-makers about security threats. The IC takes proactive measures to prevent myriad national disasters, from to cyberattacks to violent acts of terrorism. Intelligence analysts sift through immense amounts of raw data, piecing together information that may signal danger. Their work helps to safeguard people and property throughout our country every day.
The intelligence studies master’s degree program examines the impact of national security operations on international relations, and vice versa. Courses provide context on contemporary issues, such as the Department of Homeland Security’s establishment in the wake of 9/11. Learners also consider how government organizations, such as the National Security Agency, participate in intelligence operations.
Classroom exercises and case studies help students further understand national intelligence activities. Moreover, degree-seekers in this online program study the law as it pertains to intelligence processes.
Upholding Criminal Justice
Criminal intelligence (CRIMINT) plays a key role in our justice system. Analysts study trends in crime and research criminal organizations to assist law enforcement agencies. CRIMINT is also integral to active investigations and helps to facilitate successful prosecutions.
Learners consider how the IC’s objectives and strategies therefore overlap with those of federal, state, and local police. Courses underscore how intel operations combat criminal activities and help support public safety.
This master’s degree program is a multidimensional survey of the intelligence field. Learners gain insight into the ways in which strategic intelligence aids homeland security, criminal justice, and military objectives. Additionally, class discussions engage students in conversations about intel operations within the corporate world.
Program requirements include a total of 36 credit hours, which consist of:
- One concentration (12 credit hours)
- Core requirements (18 credit hours)
- Graduate electives (3 credit hours)
- Final program requirement (3 credit hours)
“Students may come into the program thinking of intelligence only as it relates to the military. This program will open their aperture to consider all 18 agencies and organizations that conduct strategic intelligence. For example, the way the U.S. Air Force conducts intelligence is vastly different from that of the Treasury Department.”
—Dr. David Kritz, Assistant Department Chair, Associate Professor, Intelligence Studies
The Master of Arts program also grants students the opportunity to complete internships in the security and intelligence fields. Internships provide real-world experience and count for academic credit. Students coordinate their own placements, which must receive approval from faculty. Previous students have interned at the:
- Department of State, Office of Foreign Mission
- United Service Organizations (USO)
- Air Force Research Laboratory
- U.S. Forces Korea
