Understanding the Syllabus: A Guide for Students

As students embark on their academic journey at American Public University System, it's crucial to recognize the syllabus for each of their courses as more than just a document outlining the semester's expectations. It is an agreement between students and their faculty, a foundation that ensures a fair and structured learning environment for all.

The following expectations will help students navigate the academic landscape within the framework of the syllabus, understanding its role, the exceptions that may arise, and the recourse available in cases where students feel the syllabus is not being upheld.

The Purpose of the Syllabus

The syllabus sets the tone for a course, detailing the curriculum, deadlines, grading policies, and other essential information. By enrolling in the course, students agree to follow the syllabus, just as faculty commit to upholding the syllabus. The syllabus helps clearly set expectations for both students and faculty from the outset of a course. Occasionally, we find that syllabi need to be updated to accurately reflect the standards of our institution. If students find any information that they believe is an error, they should reach out to their instructor. In these cases, we work diligently to make the updates in a transparent and empowering manner.

Exceptions to the Rule

Life is unpredictable, and extenuating circumstances may affect a student's ability to meet the requirements as outlined in the course syllabus. In such cases, communication with faculty is key. Written exceptions, granted at the faculty's discretion, may be made to accommodate a student’s needs. However, these exceptions are not a given and should be sought with genuine need and professional dialogue.

Faculty Discretion in Course Management

Faculty members are entrusted with the management of their courses within the boundaries of the syllabus. This includes logistical decisions such as entering temporary grades. For example, a zero entered in the gradebook after granting an assignment extension is a placeholder, not a final grade.  Other examples include faculty asking for a rewrite if inappropriate use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or plagiarism is detected in a student’s paper or faculty allowing a late submission, but still deciding to take off points for lateness. Each case is unique, but we expect students and faculty to work together to ensure that the rigor and purpose of each course assignment, as outlined in the syllabus, is achieved cooperatively. 

The Appeals Process

Despite the best intentions, misunderstandings and disputes can arise. If a student believes a decision deviates from the syllabus or written exceptions they have received from their faculty member, the university provides a structured appeals process for specific situations.
